What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the first and largest cryptocurrency, launched in 2009. It runs on a public network no company or government controls, with a supply fixed at 21 million coins. People buy it as a long-term store of value, as an investment, and to move money without a bank in the middle.
The price you see above is set entirely by supply and demand across hundreds of exchanges worldwide, trading 24 hours a day. There is no central bank setting a rate and no closing bell. That is why the number moves while you watch it.
Three things drive most of the movement. Demand cycles: interest arrives in waves, and price follows attention. Supply mechanics: new bitcoin enters circulation on a fixed schedule that halves roughly every four years, an event covered in our halving. The wider market: regulation, interest rates and risk appetite move bitcoin the way they move every other asset people invest in.
